A little about me!
Hello my
name is Nikki,
My musical background is from elementary school
to sophomore of high school I was always involved with some kind of musical
program. In elementary school, I was introduced to different types of
composers, dancing, and actually reading basic musical notes. I began to
express interest in playing an instrument; specifically, the violin. When
middle school came around, I signed up to join the middle school orchestra.
That was when I had my first experience with actually playing the violin and
playing in concerts for an audience. After middle school, I went on to join my
high school orchestra, but after sophomore year I stopped playing all together
because I was trying to get used to being in running start (college during high
school). I am now back to playing the violin again and trying to reteach myself
how to play/ read musical notes. I have been watching a lot of YouTube videos
on how to play again, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QS8uJVIjZA
to give myself a refresher of what the basic notes are. I do not have any
immediate family members that are musicians, I am the only one who actually
took interest in learning to play an instrument. Also, one of the major reasons
that I took this class was because I watch these YouTube's called “TwoSetViolin”
they are trying to reintroduce classical music to the younger generations so
that the classical pieces would be more well known. One of my most favorite
videos that inspired me to get more into learning about classical music
composers is, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHHp1hsC4Nc, because to guess what composer it was knowing the similar sounds during each period of time when the music was created helped them guess which composer was the correct one.
My musical preference is all over the spectrum, I listen to
music from classical pieces like Vivaldi’s four seasons to Zed to Doris Day.
Any type of music I listen to really depends on my mood at the time. If I am
studying or need to be in a focused mind set, I will usually turn on Mozart and
Tchaikovsky. However, if I was hanging out with friends, I would put on more of
pop, rap, and r&b because they usually give off a nice fun mood. I am always
open to listen to new music and I don’t discriminate the type of genre that the
music was inspired by. Music in my life had a huge impact on who I am because I
feel like I can really connect to another person by knowing the type of music
they listen too.
I really hope that this class will introduce me to more and
different types of classical music composers because I feel like I am missing
out on so many great pieces of music by composers that I have not been
introduced too. Before taking this, I had already been interested in going to orchestra
concerts, but I was only able to go one time in my life because my parents are
not really into classical music, they like more modern music. So, I hope this
class will give me those chances to re-experience live orchestra music. I also
hope that I will be able to learn about other kinds of classical music, because
I know that classical music is not only preformed by an orchestra, they have other
types of performers as well.
I feel like a fear of mine is trying to recognize major
styles of western art music from listening to it. I feel like I would get so
confused when trying to recognize what piece came from which composer and time.
